Montréal, March 1, 2023 - In a powerful new collaboration, UniAction Films, Les Films de l'Hydre and Appapacho Films are partnering on the production and promotion of the feature film Chiennes de faïence, a bold and evocative cinematic work that explores the complexities of women’s identity, resistance, and representation in contemporary society.

Directed by the rising voice of Quebec cinema, Marie-Hélène Panisset, Chiennes de faïence brings to light themes often left in the shadows—intersecting cultural expectations, the resilience of women navigating dual identities, and the silence that surrounds many aspects of womanhood. The film’s title, which evokes both fragility and ferocity, encapsulates the paradoxes faced by women trying to find their voice within and against societal molds.

UniAction Films, known for its commitment to cultural diplomacy and social impact through the arts, sees this collaboration as a natural extension of its mission. “Chiennes de faïence challenges dominant narratives and opens space for dialogue, which is exactly the kind of conversation we want to ignite through cinema,” said a UniAction spokesperson. The organization will be co-hosting screenings, panel discussions, and public engagements around the film to foster meaningful exchanges on gender, culture, and identity.

For Les Films de l’Hydre, this partnership reflects its long-standing dedication to auteur-driven works that confront stereotypes and give marginalized voices a platform. The film is produced with the same sharp eye for social nuance that has defined its catalogue, blending poetic realism with unflinching authenticity.

This alliance is also a cultural statement: that the arts can be used as a tool for reflection, resistance, and reconciliation. With a narrative that touches on the sensitive terrain of veiling, cultural pressure, and the unspoken expectations placed on women across generations and communities, Chiennes de faïence is poised to resonate widely, both within Quebec and internationally.

The feature film is set to enter post-production later this year, with festival premieres and community screenings anticipated in early 2025.

Through this collaboration, UniAction Films and Les Films de l’Hydre reaffirm their shared belief that film is not only an artform but also a catalyst for social dialogue—and that the stories of women, in all their contradiction and courage, must be told.
